You may not know it yet but, Debra Castellano is your new best friend. From the moment she steps out on stage and launches into an animated tale of first dates and loving verses about her wrists, you immediately feel like you’re sitting with a friend at brunch, shooting the breeze over mimosas and pancakes. There were times I wanted to interrupt with “Shut up! Are you serious, gurl?” and a high five. It was as if she were talking to only me.
The Adventures of Swamp Girl shepherds us on a hilarious journey of life’s highs, lows and total knockouts. Equipped with her ukulele, Castellano wades through the mucky waters of her emotional “swamp,” dishing on everything from relationships, to breakups to a miscarriage and a breast cancer diagnosis. Not funny at all, right? Wrong! Well, kind of wrong. Her witty inner dialogue and quirky, honest revelations digs up the adventure in life’s harsh unexpected challenges.
What is the “swamp” exactly? I’m sure many people have been knee-deep in it before and probably will be there again. What I loved about Castellano’s play was the way she dove into her swamp and took on the issues. What’s in there? What will you learn about yourself? Discoveries are made, insecurities are embraced and you learn that some frustrations can be expressed with a sexy little, rage-filled dancing to AC/DC (you’re going to have to see the show to find out where that little ditty comes into play).
This show is definitely worth seeing! There’s so much more that I want to say about it but, I don’t want to give away every one of the show’s high moments. I will say that The Adventures of Swamp Girl will have you considering your own murky, mucky swamp. Debra Castellano is a wonderful storyteller, possessing more than enough heartwarming depth and humorous charm to keep you guessing. Entertainment is pretty much guaranteed.
