We have just added Louise in Charlestown to Indie Theater Now -- this new play by Penny Jackson is a one-woman drama about a 12-year-old girl named Patty who learns about prejudice and bigotry first-hand when she becomes friends with another girl named Louise. Patty is Irish-American and Louise is from Jamaica. Patty's friends and neighbors--the play is set in a Boston neighborhood in 1986--are not happy to welcome Louise and her family to their turf. The play is wise and sad and all too relevant. I hope you will check it out!
Louise in Charlestown premieres Saturday, September 26 at the 2015 United Solo Festival! (Details are here, in this great interview we did with Penny about her play.)
Louise is the first of what we hope will be many plays from this year's United Solo to be published on Indie Theater Now. We've been working with United Solo founder Omar Sangare and the festival's general manager Marcin Lipinski to create collections of United Solo works on ITN since the festival launched in 2010. Check out previous collections here, here, and here.
I'm delighted to note that last year's collection of 20 United Solo scripts is now complete on ITN! I'm proud to have these terrific works in our library. They include new plays by United Solo veterans Nancy Redman and Pippa White; new solo shows by ITN alumni playwrights Tyler Grimes, Derek Davidson, and Matthew Ethan Davis; and shows by ITN newbies Julia Jackson, Matthew LaBanca, Gary Walker, LeLand Gantt, David Shaw, Kris Kling, Sandy Simona, Javier Rivera, Stephanie Satie, Steven Gallagher, Verna Gillis, Gina Femia, Ann Talman, and Addie Walsh. There are stories of great courage and of great love; of overcoming odds and of coming to terms with one's truest self. I love the diversity and spirit of these voices! I hope you will check out these plays and get to know these excellent new playwrights.
And watch for announcements of the rest of our 2015 United Solo collection, coming soon!
