Indie Theater Hall of Fame's People of the Decade

December 12, 2014

Today we're excited to announce the first of ten "People of the Decade" in the Indie Theater Hall of Fame!

When we launched the Hall of Fame last month, we asked all of the inductees to vote for the five members who, in their view, had made the most significant and outstanding contributions to the NYC indie theater scene during the past ten years. More than 75 Hall of Fame members voted, and the top ten vote-getters will be recognized as People of the Decade. We will be announcing the honorees one at a time, every Friday from now until February 13th. So stay tuned!

We think that this is a particularly meaningful recognition because it is bestowed upon these individuals and companies by their peers.

So, without further ado, I am delighted to announce our first "People of the Decade": JOHN CLANCY and NANCY WALSH! (Learn more about them at the Hall of Fame website.)

John and Nancy are celebrating 20 years of collaboration in NYC with their retrospective benefit at the New Ohio Theater next Tuesday, December 16. Get details about the show on Facebook. We will be there: we can't wait to see John and Nancy perform some of their signature work. John and Nancy helped create the New York International Fringe Festival, and there and elsewhere have pioneered a style of (post-dramatic?) theater that galvanizes audiences by exposing the artifice of theater purposefully, implicating us in the performance to remind us that our own actions, now and/or after the show, have the potential to bring change to the world.

John also is a founder and the Executive Director of the League of Independent Theater, which has helped unite the indie theater community in New York City to address challenges we face and to help engage the membership with political leaders.

Listen to this podcast that I recorded with John and Nancy a few months ago about their work and collaboration.

And join me in congratulating John and Nancy for this accolade they have deservedly been awarded by their peers. Our second Person of the Decade will be announced next week!

Loco7's "Undefined Fraction" at La MaMa
I got to pay a visit to one of my all-time favorite indie theaters, La MaMa E.T.C., for a performance of Undefined Fraction, which is part of the company's 2015 Puppet Series. This blend of edgy puppetry, physical theater, and dance is an exemplar of the kind of meditative hybrid installation/happening/drama that has been a mainstay of this East Village institution for decades.
