A Thousand Plays in 1,000 Days

June 17, 2014

Has anyone ever published a thousand plays in a thousand days?

I have no idea, but I know that we're on the verge of doing exactly that.

On Thursday, we will be exactly 50 days away from Indie Theater Now's third birthday. We're planning to celebrate in a big way during every one of those 50 days, by doing what we've been doing since we launched: bringing inventive, surprising, unusual, often unheralded, always interesting new American plays to our audience.

Our goal is to have 1,000 scripts on the site by our birthday, August 7th.

That will be one thousand plays in 1,000 days. (Actually three years is a tad more than a thousand days, but we're going to round down. Hope nobody minds!)

I am a little astonished myself by this number.

I've had a ball curating, reading, and putting all of these works on Indie Theater Now. I know we've helped these plays and playwrights get in front of colleges, theaters, and other audiences all over the USA and the world.

And after we get this first thousand done on August 7th, we have no intention of stopping. The next thousand will be just as amazing. There will be new plays from this year's FringeNYC and United Solo festivals, brand new works by the more than 500 playwrights who are already part of the ITN family, and startling, wonderful plays by people we haven't even met yet.

Help us countdown as we get to the magical 1,000th play.

In the fifty days from June 19th through August 7th, we'll be highlighting at least TWO brand new plays on ITN in my daily "Play for Today" column here on the blog. That means that when we hit our birthday there will be a full thousand plays on the site. Maybe well get there sooner than that...

Cheer on the playwrights as they bring us their new work! And let me know what you'd like to see in the SECOND thousand plays...

Loco7's "Undefined Fraction" at La MaMa
I got to pay a visit to one of my all-time favorite indie theaters, La MaMa E.T.C., for a performance of Undefined Fraction, which is part of the company's 2015 Puppet Series. This blend of edgy puppetry, physical theater, and dance is an exemplar of the kind of meditative hybrid installation/happening/drama that has been a mainstay of this East Village institution for decades.

United Solo 2014: Done; United Solo 2015: Starting Now!
ITN's United Solo 2014 play collection is now complete; and our first 2015 play--LOUISE IN CHARLESTOWN by Penny Jackson--is available as well.
