Checking In on Martin's 2014 Resolutions

February 3, 2014

A bit more than a month ago, I posted this (on Facebook and in an email sent to all of ITN's and nytheater now's subscribers; emphasis added):

My New Year's Resolutions for 2014:

1. I resolve to lead NYTE through another year of dedicated and focused service to the indie theater community. I remain passionate and steadfast in my commitment to making indie theater viable, findable, accessible, and valued.

2. I resolve to work with the indie theater community to find innovative and effective ways to do what we do even better. I'll even go so far right now as to say this: every month in 2014, we'll introduce at least one idea on Indie Theater Now or nytheater now to grow our sector and its constituents.

Well, with one month of 2014 completed, I thought it might be interesting to check with everyone and talk about how we're doing on our resolutions. And I'm happy to report that we've done a couple of things on ITN that I think fit the bill:

  • Play for Today: On January 1st, we implemented a new daily feature on nytheater now, in which we shine a little spotlight on one of the plays in ITN's library. I've been writing short pieces that talk about these plays, their authors, and what makes them special. I think they're reminding people of the breadth and depth of the work in our library and--by extension--the indie theater oeuvre. The feedback on Play for Today has been great, and it's currently the second most popular section of this blog.
  • Our New Home Page: Last week, we unveiled a new version of the Indie Theater Now home page that, we believe, really helps readers understand what's available on our site and makes it easier to get to it. I'm really interested in what you think of the new home page--please let me know by sending me an email. (And when you check out the new front page at www.indietheaternow.com, be sure to sign in--there are some special features available once ITN knows it's you.)
I'm excited about what we've accomplished so far and also about what's coming up. Stay tuned!

Loco7's "Undefined Fraction" at La MaMa
I got to pay a visit to one of my all-time favorite indie theaters, La MaMa E.T.C., for a performance of Undefined Fraction, which is part of the company's 2015 Puppet Series. This blend of edgy puppetry, physical theater, and dance is an exemplar of the kind of meditative hybrid installation/happening/drama that has been a mainstay of this East Village institution for decades.
Trav S.D.'s Great Vaudeville History
A look back at Trav S.D.'s book on vaudeville, published 10 years ago this month.
United Solo 2014: Done; United Solo 2015: Starting Now!
ITN's United Solo 2014 play collection is now complete; and our first 2015 play--LOUISE IN CHARLESTOWN by Penny Jackson--is available as well.
